Who We are...
Established in 2001, the Midwestern Amputee Golf Association (MWAGA) is a volunteer group of individuals who have experienced and overcome the loss of a limb or limbs and utilize the game of golf to promote friendship, fitness, fun and rehabilitation through active participation in golf for amputees of all ages. We believe our local annual amputee golf event helps not just amputee golfers, but any golfer with a physical disability, achieve some of these objectives.
The MWAGA is a 501-C-3 non-profit organization headquartered in Northbrook, IL and includes Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota in its region. The Midwestern region is under the larger umbrella of NAGA, the National Amputee Golf Association (nagagolf.org) and we are a member of the United States Golf Alliance (USAGA.org).
Competition in sporting events, combined with the fellowship of men and women in similar life situations, provides a wonderful environment for sharing ideas, realizing potential and forging life-long friendships. The MWAGA also promotes the value of golf for rehabilitation by providing information and training to rehabilitation centers and prosthetic facilities. We utilize NAGA’s “First Swing” program to partner volunteer amputees with clinical therapists to use golf in rehabilitating their physically challenged clientele.
We do more than play golf…………we have donated to the firemen in New York City after 9/11, OperationWarriorWishes.org (benefits the Wounded Warriors) and an orphanage in Haiti. We also provide annual academic scholarships to amputees and family members of amputees. In September 2013, a member of our group traveled to Boston to mentor some of the amputees from the Boston Marathon bombing. Another member traveled to Guatemala in October 2014 with seven other prosthetic clinicians (ROMP) and five physical therapists on a humanitarian mission to provide free prosthetic care to amputees who had limited access to such care (Hearts in Motion). This team fitted 29 Guatemalan amputees with new prosthetic limbs.
